Abstract
PZN-PT (Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O33-x%PbTiO33) exhibits a maximum strain versus electric field exceeding 1% if it is poled along <001 > Two suggestions exist for the origin of this exceptional strain the domain structure created during poling, 'polarisation rotation' due to the existence of a monoclinic phase reported for PZN 8%PT Neutron diffraction data will be presented that shows the monoclmic phase is in fact a distortion of the ambient phase resulting from intersecting domain structures This interpretation also reconciles PZN-4 5%PT which shows similar properties to PZN 8%PT yet does not exist in the monoclmic structure. © 2005 Australian Institute of Physics
