- ItemANSTO at a glance(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2015-06-05) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology OrganisationThe Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is one of Australia’s largest public research organisations. It manages much of Australia’s large science infrastructure, runs businesses, supports industry and provides trusted advice to government
- ItemANSTO's nuclear security related activities(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2016-05-02) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology OrganisationThe Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is the centre of Australia’s nuclear expertise. ANSTO promotes nuclear security in Australia, the Asia-Pacific Region and around the world.
- ItemANSTO: research for Australia's future(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, ) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology OrganisationFor more than 35 years, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation's unique blend of physicists, chemists, biomedicine and nuclear scientists have diligently and systematically investigated the very fundamental building block of our world, the atom. ANSTO's efforts have led to the betterment of life for millions of people and have kept Australians at the forefront of world development of nuclear technology. The core of ANSTO's operation of Australia's only two nuclear reactors has been to find peaceful uses for nuclear science, and to make them relevant to our environment, our working lives and our health. But more applications of nuclear science to improve the quality of life for everday Australians need to be found.
- ItemNational Deuteration Facility(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2015-07-09) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology OrganisationThe Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’s (ANSTO) National Deuteration Facility (NDF) offers the facilities, staff and expertise to produce molecules where all or part of the molecular hydrogen is in the form of deuterium (2H or D). The facility produces deuterated proteins, biopolymers, nucleic acids and synthesised small organic molecules such as lipids, phospholipids, sugars, surfactants, aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic, heterocyclic compounds. Double and triple labelling of proteins with both deuterium and the stable isotopes carbon-13 and/or nitrogen-15, are also available. The NDF offers molecular deuteration using either in vivo biodeuteration or chemical deuteration techniques.
- ItemNuclear science and technology benefiting all Australians(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2015-11-07) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology OrganisationNuclear science and technology already play an important role in our daily lives, with widespread applications throughout medicine, industry and the environment. While there has already been much progress, the potential of nuclear science and technology remains vast. By enabling scientists to discover how things work from the inside out, we learn how things work at the most fundamental level. Researchers are using nuclear facilities and techniques to help find cures for cancer and other diseases, make breakthroughs in clean energy production, create new materials, gain new understandings about the environment, and invent products to create brand new industries.
- ItemRadiation consultancy, training and calibration(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2016-02-12) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology OrganisationThe ANSTO Radiation Services team offers advice, training, instrument calibration and consultancy services to ensure the safe, effective use and management of radiation in all industry sectors including mining, construction, manufacturing, healthcare, government, education, universities, research and other fields where radiation is present. The radiation experts at ANSTO provide services and tailored advice to ensure the safety of your employees, the community and the environment, as well as providing assurance that your practices align with relevant national and international regulations and standards. ANSTO operates the Open Pool Australian Lightwater (OPAL) reactor, Australia’s only nuclear research reactor. We offer a range of services including: • consulting in radiation protection monitoring and health physics • radiation training courses • radiation instrument calibration • radioactive source inventories • emergency preparedness and response • systems safety and reliability consulting
- ItemSafely managing Australia's radioactive waste(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2015-12-09) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology OrganisationIn Australia, radioactive waste is only produced from beneficial uses of radioactive materials in medicine, research and industry - and the operation of the research reactor at ANSTO. The waste is made up of radioactive material that has no foreseeable further use. Just like car batteries, mobile phones and some household chemicals, this material requires particular procedures and methods for its management, storage and disposal. Australian governments impose strict controls on radioactive waste management including treatment to convert the waste into a solid stable form and measurement to determine the amount of radioactivity. At present, more than 100 sites across Australia are licenced to store low and intermediate level radioactive materials on an interim basis. This includes sites at ANSTO, as well as in metropolitan areas and regional towns and cities. Although safe, these storage conditions are temporary or not designed for disposal and long term storage. Many of those facilities are also nearing capacity. As per international best practice, purpose-built national facility is the safest and most cost effective way to manage radioactive waste disposal and storage over the long term. The Australian Government is currently seeking an appropriate site for Australia’s national radioactive waste management facility.
- ItemSafely managing Australia's radioactive waste(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2015-12-09) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology OrganisationNuclear medicine produced by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) has benefited generations of Australians since the 1960s. With benefits come responsibilities, and the by-product of nuclear medicine includes radioactive waste. Australia responsibly manages this waste in both the long and short term.
- ItemShipment of research reactor spent fuel from Australia to France(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation and Compagnie Générale des Matières Nucléaires (COGEMA), 1999-11) Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation; Compagnie Générale des Matières Nucléaires (COGEMA)The first maritime shipment of research reactor spent fuel from Australia to France initiates a new partnership between the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, ANSTO, and the French Compagnie Générale des Matières Nucléaires, COGEMA. The spent fuel elements that will be transferred to France arise from the HIFAR research reactor, operated by ANSTO. HlFAR is at the heart of Australia's nuclear science and technology program, which encompasses the fields of nuclear medicine, serving domestic and foreign markets, materials and environmental research. Spent fuel from nuclear research reactors may be managed under three main strategies: long-term storage, direct disposal or overseas reprocessing. Given the particular nature of ANSTO’s fuel, Australia has chosen the overseas reprocessing path due to the widely recognised advantages of this proven industrial solution. To implement this strategy, ANSTO has contracted with COGEMA, the World leader in nuclear fuel reprocessing, with more than three decades of successful and safe industrial operation. The reprocessing operations as well as the associated transports will be carried out under very stringent Quality Assurance/ Quality Control policies and will be in full compliance with all relevant international and national regulations, particularly those related to safety.
