For many years man has recognised and given heed to various audible warnings. The creaking of timber in structural applications has long been used as a monitoring device. The familiar "cry of tin" has often been demonstrated to interest students in the study of materials and, on occasions, to impress members of the public. It was not until the early 1950s that any real attempts were made to establish acoustic emission as a field of science rather than a toy or a warning.en_AU
