Natural background radiation has been measured along typical road traverses in the environs of Sydney and Lucas Heights. Soil samples were taken and radioactive elements identified by gamma spectrometry. The gamma-ray dose rates were in the range 20-40 mrad/year though higher and lower values were recorded. The normal gamma-ray intensities at the surface were generally related to the nature of the underlying weathered rock formation. The characteristic dose rates are listed.en_AU
