The literature on fluid flow distribution through randomly packed beds is reviewed in relation to a feasibility study of a pebble bed reactor. The methods of measurement used are briefly discussed and existing theoretical solutions are appraised. The experimental data of different observers are in poor agreement. Existing theoretical derivations are found to be inadequate for general application. An alternative theory is proposed which relies upon experiment to specify a boundary condition. The existing superficial velocity profiles can be reasonably predicted in terms of the centre line velocity provided this boundary condition is allowed to vary.en_AU
