dc.description.abstractInelastic neutron scattering is widely used to study the lattice vibrational (phonon) and magnetic (spin wave and crystal field) excitations in condensed matter. In order to characterise such excitations comprehensively measurements on single crystal specimens are required and the most appropriate instrument for doing this at a steady state (reactor) neutron source is a three-axis spectrometer (TAS). We will describe the characteristics of the three axis spectrometer TAIPAN, which is currently under construction at the replacement research reactor, ANSTO and which will be available to the Australian scientific community in 2006.en_AU
