I is the dedicated materials engineering neutron instrument at the high- flux OPAL research reactor at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Lucas Heights. The primary function of the instrument is the determination of residual stresses within the interior of bulk engineering components and test samples, in particular for the development of modern engineering processes (e.g. welding, additive layer manufacturing, peening etc.) and variety of structural integrity investigations. It is important to appreciate that residual stresses are superimposed upon any applied stresses. Often residual stresses can be greater than stresses generated by applied load, therefore from a design and structural integrity point of view they need to be understood and quantified in the same way as external stresses. Neutron diffraction provides vital non-destructive measurements of residual stresses deep within the interior of components, in three dimensions, in small test volumes, in thin and thick specimens. KOWARI is well equipped to study residual strains/stresses in complex engineering components in a range of materials. In this paper an overview of the recent industrial projects and the importance of the strain/stress scanning diffraction measurements in large-scale components will be discussed.en_AU
