Significant design features of the irradiation are described, and reasons for their use are given. Results of post irradiation measurements are compared with predictable parameters of neutron flux perturbation and self attenuation of cobalt. A brief description is given of methods used to encapsulate targets, make up the composite source, and install it in its final position. In general, there was good agreement between predicted and observed activities, a distinct feature being the unexpectedly high activation in the lower positions of the irradiation rig. An effective irradiation period of 3220 Mwd thermal reactor power produced specific activities of up to 105 curies per gram of cobalt.
