- ItemJournal of Applied Crystallography: the first 50 years and beyond(International Union of Crystallography, 2018-04) Allen, AJ; Hajdu, J; McIntyre, GJThe first issue of Journal of Applied Crystallography appeared in April 1968.1 So, with this issue we celebrate its 50th birthday. We should start by expressing our appreciation for all the readers, authors, reviewers, editors and technical staff who have made the journal what it has become over the past 50 years. The first Editor of Journal of Applied Crystallography was the pioneer of small-angle scattering, André Guinier, who guided the journal through its first two volumes in 1968 and 1969, after which he stood down on being elected IUCr President. André Guinier was succeeded by Ray Young who served as Editor from 1970 to 1978, Michael Hart from 1978 to 1984, Michel Schlenker from 1984 to 1990, Michael Glazer from 1990 to 1999, Gernot Kostorz from 1999 to 2007 and Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla from 2007 to 2017. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla was joined by two of us, Janos Hajdu and Andrew Allen, in 2014, and she was succeeded by our other current Main Editor, Garry McIntyre, in 2017.
- ItemTeaching and education highlighted(International Union of Crystallography, 2022-04) Dawe, LN; García-Ruiz, JM; Hajdu, J; McIntyre, GJ; Meilleur, F; Stephenson, LLThe development of the Teaching and Education (T&E) category of articles in Journal of Applied Crystallography, leading to the recent appointment of Louise Dawe as an additional T&E Editor, is described. Louise and ongoing T&E Editor Juan Manuel García-Ruiz outline their vision for the category. Teaching and Education (T&E) was quietly introduced as a new category of article in Journal of Applied Crystallography (JAC) in an editorial by the then Editor Mike Glazer in 1994 (Glazer, 1994).1 The brief for T&E articles in subsequent Notes for Authors was short and fairly broad: ‘Articles in this category cover all aspects of an educational nature related to the general field of crystallography’ © International Union of Crystallography - Open Access
