Title: Metallographic study of the structure of oxide layers on zirconium alloys.

Abstract: A study has been made of the effect of different metallographic mounting and polishing techniques on the appearance in cross section of the oxide layers formed on zirconium and its alloys under various conditions of oxidation. Optical micrographs were prepared after the various stages of polishing and compared with scanning electron micrographs of oxide fracture surfaces. For post-transition oxides on Zircaloy-2, similar detail was visible both on the fracture surfaces, and on polished surfaces after prolonged vibratory polishing. It is concluded that surfaces prepared by this technique probably best represent the 'as-grown' structure of the oxide.
