Abstract: The structure of Sm(2)O(3) in its B-type monoclinic (C2/m) form has been refined through Rietveld refinement of powder neutron diffraction data. In order to overcome the high absorption cross-section of naturally occurring Sm the Sm-154 was used. The refined structure shows the average coordination of each of the three crystallographically unique Sm sites to be comparable. An un-expected result of this work is the relatively large difference between the refined (8.62 (1) fm) and tabulated (9.30 fm) scattering lengths of Sm-154. Evidently small variations in the precise isotopic composition can significantly alter this value. © 2011, Elsevier Ltd.
