- ItemAgricultural production and consumption and the 2001 population census data in the Sydney statistical division(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2003-05) Domel, RUThe determination of dose to man in any consequence analysis either from accidental release of radionuclides or from continuous releases, requires data on the food pathway in the calculations of the total dose. The study of the consequence analysis from an accidental release of radionuclides from ANSTO in the Environmental Impact Survey (EIS, 1998) for the replacement research reactor (RRR) was based on the conservative estimate that 25% of the total eaten was grown within 15km of ANSTO (PPL, 1998). This same estimate and the dependent dose calculation from the food pathways were also used in the Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR) for the RRR.
- ItemAssessment of the radiological health risk associated with ANSTO effluent release: including the reuse of tertiary treated sewer water and sludge and the impact of effluent entering local waterways with sewer surcharge(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2002-03) Airey, PL; Domel, RUAn analysis has been made of the radiological consequences of the release of ANSTO's aqueous discharge to the Cronulla Sewerage System. This is in response to Condition 10 of the Environmental Impact Statement supporting the Replacement Research Reactor. The analysis covers the release of effluent under normal conditions, the release of effluent as part of a sewage surge during periods of high rainfall, and the impact of the decision by Sydney Water to recycle treated sewage sludge and sewage water.

Despite this, Java is a general-purpose language suitable for applications in a similar manner to C and Fortran. Due to its object oriented structure, its user interface capabilities and its cross-platform portability, Java has a much wider potential. At the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) a model to determine critical parameters affecting radioactive doses to humans following a release of radionuclides into the atmosphere is being developed. Java was chosen because of the Graphical User Interface (GUI) capabilities and its portability across computer platforms, which were a requirement for the application, called RadC0n © World Scientific
- ItemRadCon: a radiological consequences model: technical guide - version 2.0(Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, 2000-05) Crawford, J; Domel, RU; Harris, FF; Twining, JRA Radiological Consequence model (RadCon) is being developed at ANSTO to assess the radiological consequences after an incident in any climate using appropriate meteorological and radiological transfer parameters. The major areas of interest to the developers are tropical and subtropical climates. This is particularly so given that it is anticipated that nuclear energy will become a mainstay for economies in these regions within the foreseeable future. Therefore data acquisition and use of parameter values have been concentrated primarily on these climate types. Atmospheric dispersion and deposition for Australia can be modelled and supplied by the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC one of five in the world) which is part of the Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre (BMRC) Puri et al. (1992). RadCon combines these data (i.e. the time dependent air and ground concentration generated by the dispersion model or measured quantities in the case of an actual incident) with specific regional parameter values to determine the dose to people via the major pathways of external and internal irradiation. For the external irradiation calculations data are needed on lifestyle information such as the time spent indoors/outdoors the high/low physical activity rates for different groups of people (especially critical groups) and shielding factors for housing types. For the internal irradiation calculations data are needed on food consumption effect of food processing transfer parameters (soil to plant plant to animal) and interception values appropriate for the region under study. Where the relevant data are not available default temperate data are currently used. The results of a wide ranging literature search has highlighted where specific research will be initiated to determine the information required for tropical and sub-tropical regions. The user is able to initiate sensitivity analyses within RadCon. This allows the parameters to be ranked in priority of impact within the scenario being investigated. The model provides a tool for directing future research and has application as a planning tool for emergency response operations.
