- ItemCLIC proteins, ezrin, radixin, moesin and the coupling of membranes to the actin cytoskeleton: A smoking gun?(Elsevier, 2014-02-01) Jiang, L; Phang, JM; Yu, J; Harrop, SJ; Sokolova, AV; Duff, AP; Wilik, KE; Alkhamici, H; Breit, SN; Valenzuela, SM; Brown, LJ; Curmi, PMGThe CLIC proteins are a highly conserved family of metazoan proteins with the unusual ability to adopt both soluble and integral membrane forms. The physiological functions of CLIC proteins may include enzymatic activity in the soluble form and anion channel activity in the integral membrane form. CLIC proteins are associated with the ERM proteins: ezrin, radixin and moesin. ERM proteins act as cross-linkers between membranes and the cortical actin cytoskeleton. Both CLIC and ERM proteins are controlled by Rho family small GTPases. CLIC proteins, ERM and Rho GTPases act in a concerted manner to control active membrane processes including the maintenance of microvillar structures, phagocytosis and vesicle trafficking. All of these processes involve the interaction of membranes with the underlying cortical actin cytoskeleton. The relationships between Rho GTPases, CLIC proteins, ERM proteins and the membrane:actin cytoskeleton interface are reviewed. Speculative models are proposed involving the formation of localised multi-protein complexes on the membrane surface that assemble via multiple weak interactions. - ItemA customized strategy to design intercalation-type Li-free cathodes for all-solid-state batteries(Oxford University Press, 2023-01-10) Wang, D; Yu, J; Yin, X; Shao, S; Li, Q; Wang, YC; Avdeev, M; Chen, LQ; Shi, SQPairing Li-free transition-metal-based cathodes (MX) with Li-metal anodes is an emerging trend to overcome the energy-density limitation of current rechargeable Li-ion technology. However, the development of practical Li-free MX cathodes is plagued by the existing notion of low voltage due to the long-term overlooked voltage-tuning/phase-stability competition. Here, we propose a p-type alloying strategy involving three voltage/phase-evolution stages, of which each of the varying trends are quantitated by two improved ligand-field descriptors to balance the above contradiction. Following this, an intercalation-type 2H-V1.75Cr0.25S4 cathode tuned from layered MX2 family is successfully designed, which possesses an energy density of 554.3 Wh kg−1 at the electrode level accompanied by interfacial compatibility with sulfide solid-state electrolyte. The proposal of this class of materials is expected to break free from scarce or high-cost transition-metal (e.g. Co and Ni) reliance in current commercial cathodes. Our experiments further confirm the voltage and energy-density gains of 2H-V1.75Cr0.25S4. This strategy is not limited to specific Li-free cathodes and offers a solution to achieve high voltage and phase stability simultaneously. TheAuthor(s) 2023. - ItemMagnetic ordering and spin dynamics in the S = 5/2 staggered triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba2MnTeO6(American Physical Society, 2020-09-09) Li, L; Narayanan, N; Jin, SJ; Yu, J; Liu, ZJ; Sun, HL; Wang, CW; Peterson, VK; Liu, Y; Danilkin, SA; Yao, DX; Yu, DH; Wang, MWe report studies of the magnetic properties of a staggered stacked triangular lattice Ba2MnTeO6 using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering measurements, and first-principles density functional theory calculations. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal Ba2MnTeO6 to be antiferromagnetically ordered with a propagation vector k=(0.5,0.5,0) and Néel transition temperature of TN≈20 K. The dominant interaction derived from the Curie-Weiss fitting to the inverse DC susceptibility is antiferromagnetic. Modeling of the inelastic neutron scattering data with linear spin wave theory yielded magnetic exchange interactions for the nearest intralayer, nearest interlayer, and next-nearest interlayer J1=0.27(3), meV J2=0.27(3) meV, and J3=−0.05(1) meV, respectively, and a small value of easy-axis anisotropy of Dzz=−0.01 meV. We derive a magnetic phase diagram that reveals a collinear stripe-type antiferromagnetic order that is stabilized by the competition between J1, J2, and J3. ©2020 American Physical Society
- ItemNarrowed bandgaps and stronger excitonic effects from small boron nitride nanotubes(Elsevier, 2009-07-16) Yu, J; Yu, DH; Chen, YS; Chen, H; Lin, MY; Cheng, BM; Li, J; Duan, WThe bandgap of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) is generally considered to be independent on tube radius and chirality. However, we have observed that the bandgaps of BNNTs do depend on the tube size. Photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy with variable photon energies in vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) range revealed that the bandgap becomes smaller when the tube diameter decreases. This is consistent with red-shifted luminescent emissions. The strong interactions between excitons and phonons are possibly responsible for the bandgap narrowing as the function of nanotube size. © 2009, Elsevier Ltd.
